Once you have picked a destination, learn everything you can about the area. Buy a decent city or regional map of where you are going to be, and take time to look it over to find museums, environs, and big sightseeing areas. You can start doing this a couple of months out, but should be finished about a week before your trip. Even last minute packing won’t be as stressful, when you have a list to reference. You must carry your vaccination certificates with you if you are traveling to a country that requires them. You might need to show it upon entering and exiting the country, and also when moving between cities. Without the certificate, authorities have no way of knowing that you’ve had the vaccination and may have to detain you for quarantine.
To travel light, only pack essentials. The fewer things carried, the less the chances of having the items stolen or lost. Take with you only the essentials, and try to avoid stuffing your bag with too many heavy pairs of shoes.
You want to be very careful when catching a taxi in another country when traveling. If you simply could not get a recommendation and have to grab a vehicle immediately, all legitimate services should have some form of driver Identification and company license available in plain view on the dash. Anybody can add a taxi sign to their car, but they might not be legitimate.
The shoes you wear when you go flying should be comfortable, lightweight, and easy to take off and put on. You will have to remove them for security checks. Shoes that you find comfortable are critical. Because you will do more sitting than standing good support shoes are not necessary. Flip-flops or sandals are ideal air travel footwear.
Be sure to reserve space for your car if you must store it at the airport while you are away. It can be more expensive to book this parking the day you fly. Consider a taxi if you live near the airport.

Many people get jet lag when they travel to different time zones. This is almost impossible to avoid, but the effects can be lessened if you sleep more a few days prior to the flight. Try to rest as much as possible while on the plane.
